Education serves as the first step in the recovery process. I've compiled a list of resources that I personally endorse as top sources of information and guidance on chronic pain, neuroplastic pain, symptoms, and recovery.

BOOKS

The Way Out: A revolutionary scientifically proven approach to healing chronic pain.
By Alan Gordon and Alon Ziv. 

 

Alan Gordon is a psychologist and the founder of The Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, California. He specializes in the treatment of chronic pain and other physical symtpoms. He developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), which is the primary treatment for chronic pain recovery. This book is an excellent introduction to neuroplastic symptoms and PRT. 

 

Unlearn Your Pain: A 28 day process to reprogram your brain.
By Dr. Howard Schubiner and Michael Betzold

 

Dr. Howard Schubiner is the founder and director of the Mind Body Medicine Program at Providence Hospital. He is the leading expert in Mind Body Syndrome (another name for neuroplastic pain). This book offers a comprehensive source of information on Mind Body Syndrome and how to recover from it. *Disclaimer* If you have a history of trauma, I highly recommend using the writing exercises with a trauma informed therapist. 

 

The Mindbody Prescription: Healing The body, Healing The Pain.
By Dr. John Sarno

 

Dr. John Sarno is a trailblazer in the field of mind-body medicine. He is creditied with pioneering the mind body movement, paving the way for pracitioners such as Dr. Howard Schubiner, Alan Gordon, and Dr. David Schechter. Sarnos approach emphasizes the role that emotional and psychological factors play in the development and perpetuation of chronic pain and symptoms. 

 

Explain Pain:
By Lorimer Moseley and David Butler

 

Lorimer Moseley is the professor of clinical neurosciences at the University of South Australia. He is a brilliant pain scientist, and he was my first introduction to the science behind pain. If you are looking for a book steeped in neuroscience, yet delivered in a comprehensible way this is an excellent resource.

 

Understand Pain Live Well Again: Pain education for people in pain and busy clinicians.

Neil Pearson is a physical therapist and the clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia. His self published kindle edition book draws on the work of Lorimer Moseley and David Butler. It's an is an excellent beginner guide to the neuroscience of pain.

Anxiety plays a central role in the development and continuation of chronic pain and symptoms. Dr. Weeks is a true pioneer in the field of disorded anxiety recovery. Her work has transcended time and continues to benefit folks suffering with crippling anxiety. Just as Dr. Sarno paved the way for modern therapies like Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Dr. Weeks' work influenced modern anxiety treatment such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Her life-changing teachings played an essential role in my many recoveries.
